What each
enterprise costs
A mixed farm spends one pile of money on several businesses. The pigs, the dairy and the coffee each cost something, and the books only know if every expense says which one it was for. Famu asks once, at the moment you record it, and keeps the answer.
Sty timber and a vet visit for the sow before she farrowed.
Seedlings, and a month's wages for the woman who works the coffee.
Airtime and the padlock for the gate. Not every shilling belongs to one enterprise.
Record it where you are standing
The surest way to tag a cost is to not have to remember to.
Every enterprise's own page (the pig herd, the cattle herd, Plantings, Poultry) carries a small money strip: + Expense and + Pay a worker. Anything you record from there arrives already tagged with that enterprise. You can still change it, but you rarely need to.
The two links on the right go the other way: Expenses and Wages open the full lists, filtered to this enterprise.
Recording from Business → Expenses or Worker Payments instead? Pick the enterprise on the form. Whole farm is always an option, and a perfectly good answer for the airtime.
Name the animal, the plantation or the batch
An enterprise says "the pigs". Often you know which pig.
Under the enterprise, the form asks the narrower question: which animal, which planting, which batch. It is optional; the whole herd or crops in general is fine.
Once you name one, the record decides the enterprise. A planting is always Crops, a batch is always Poultry, and an animal belongs to its own herd. The enterprise box locks and says so, because a cow's vet bill cannot sensibly be filed under pigs. Try it below.
Shows on the list and in reports, so you can see what each enterprise costs.
A wage or an expense tied to a planting or a batch also counts in that planting's or batch's own profit, on its page and in its report.
Ask one enterprise what it cost
A month of a mixed farm's spending. Filter it the way the app does.
Whole farm only is the filter worth opening once a month. It lists what nobody has attributed yet, and it is usually where a forgotten enterprise cost is hiding.
Wages work the same way on Worker Payments, with one rule borrowed from the savings page: a wage split into cash, savings and an item repayment shows, and counts, as its full amount, once. Grace's 300,000 is 300,000 for the crops, however much of it she took home that day.
The rules that keep it honest
A record's enterprise is a fact, not a choice
Tie a cost to a planting, a batch or an animal and the database stamps the enterprise from it, whatever the form sent. Move the cost to another record and the tag moves with it.
One record per cost
A cost names at most one animal, planting or batch. Something shared by two is two expenses, or an enterprise-level one. Famu will not guess how to split it.
Only your own farm's records
A cost can only name a planting or an animal on the same farm. That is checked by the database, not just hidden from the picker.
Old spending was sorted for you
Everything already linked to a planting or a batch was tagged Crops or Poultry when this arrived. Wages filed from an expense follow that expense, and move with it if it is re-tagged.
Switching an enterprise off keeps its history
Stop keeping goats and their old expenses still say Goats, and the filter still finds them when you edit one. A tag outlives the module.
It follows the money out of the app
The accounting export's Enterprise column reads the same tag, and its record column names the animal or the planting.
A tag is only as good as the habit
Famu does not split shared costs for you
The borehole pump waters the cows and the tomatoes. Famu will not decide that 60% of its fuel is dairy. Record it for the whole farm, or split it into two expenses yourself if you know the shares.
The herd pages' profit card still counts feed as the herd's only cost. Tagged expenses show on the Expenses list and in the export, but are not taken off that card yet.
Earns its keep for
- Farms running two or more enterprises off one budget
- Deciding which enterprise to grow, and which to stop
- Workers who look after one herd or one plantation
- Vet bills and treatments for one animal you want on its record
Does little for
- A farm with a single enterprise: everything is already its cost
- Costs genuinely shared across the farm, like rent or the manager's phone
