Counted from transplanting

Most programmes for transplanted crops start at transplanting: prepare the beds a week before, base fertiliser the day before, the first spray two weeks after. Famu now builds a programme exactly like that, and keeps the work before transplanting before it.

Before transplanting “7 days before”

Garden preparation and base fertiliser, counted backwards from the transplant date.

From transplanting “Day 15”

Every spray after it. The transplant day itself is Day 1.

1Why it matters

Counted from the wrong day, every number is off

The same spray, counted from sowing and from transplanting.

Seedlings spend weeks in the nursery. A spray the agro-vet wrote as "day 15 after transplanting" is day 55 from sowing. If the schedule counts from sowing, the day numbers on the cards and the printed sheet stop matching the paper, and the bed preparation looks like something done after the seed went in.

Tomato: sown 20 Jan, transplanted 1 MarSame spray

Counted from sowing

Day 55

Does not match the programme. Bed preparation on 22 Feb reads as day 34.

Counted from transplanting

Day 15 7 days before transplanting

Matches the paper. Bed preparation reads as what it is.

Build it the way the agro-vet says it

Try it: switch a step between before and from, change the numbers, add a step, move the transplant date.

New template · Day 1 is TransplantingTry it

There is no "day 0" to type: the day before transplanting is "1 day before", the transplant day is Day 1.

Day 1 is can also be Sowing, Birds placed, Birth or Arrival, for a programme that counts from one of those. The date box is only a preview; nothing is dated until the template is used on a planting.

3A schedule · Template

Recreate a schedule around its transplant date

A schedule you already have, turned into a transplant programme.

Save as templateStep by step

You

  1. Open the schedule and tap Template
  2. Leave Day 1 is on Transplanting
  3. Type the transplant date, if the planting has none
  4. Add a step before, if it was never written down

Famu

  1. Counts every application from that date
  2. Anything dated earlier becomes "days before transplanting"
  3. A new date re-counts every step you have not re-timed
  4. Saves the programme as days
4On the schedule

The day numbers follow the transplant date

A schedule made from a transplant programme keeps counting from transplanting.

The printed sheet's date rail says "7d before".

The schedule remembers that it counts from transplanting, so it stays right even though the planting also has a sowing date. Edit on any schedule tied to a planting offers Day numbers count from, to switch an older schedule over.

5What you can rely on

The rules of a transplant programme

Before stays before

A step written as days before transplanting always lands ahead of the transplant date.

Day 1 is transplanting

The same number the app shows on every card, the sheet and the calendar.

No transplant date, no guess

If the planting has none, Famu asks for it. It never counts from sowing instead.

Old schedules unchanged

Schedules made before keep counting the way they always did until you switch them in Edit.

Who can build

Admins and managers build and edit templates. Anyone who can add a schedule can use one.

Up to ten years

A step can be up to 3,650 days either side of Day 1, so a typo cannot land in the year 9000.

!Worth saying out loud

Moving the transplant date later

The day numbers re-count; the dates stay

If the seedlings go in a week late and you change the planting's transplant date, the schedule's day numbers re-count from the new date, but the application dates do not move by themselves. Use Edit all on the schedule to shift them.

Earns its keep for

  • Tomatoes, cabbages, onions, peppers and other crops raised in a nursery
  • Programmes with land preparation and base fertiliser before planting out

Does little for

  • Crops sown straight in the field (use Sowing as Day 1)
  • Perennials such as coffee or matooke, on a yearly calendar

The example follows the app's rules: "N days before" is day 1 − N, "Day N" is day N, the transplant day is Day 1, and each date is the transplant date plus the day less one.
